Kuvaa elinympäristöä, jossa orgaanisten aineiden tuotanto ja hajoaminen on kohtalaista, ja myös aluetta, suota, järveä tms., jonka ravinnepitoisuus on keskinkertainen (vrt. oligotrofinen, eutrofinen, dystrofinen, hypertrofinen).

Applied to freshwater bodies that contain moderate amounts of plant nutrients and are therefore moderately productive. The term is also supplied to mires that are moderately rich in plant nutrients (compare dystrophic, eutrophic, oligotrophic, hypertrophic) (A).
