Faraday rotation requires the coupling of two orthogonal modes. This interaction enables the transfer of angular momentum between the modes, resulting in the rotation of the plane of polarization of guided light when a magnetic field is present. Without such coupling, the Faraday effect does not occur efficiently within the waveguide structure.
