Määritelmä Älysähköverkolla tarkoitetaan sähköverkkoa, joka tieto- ja viestintäteknologiaa hyödyntämällä voi havaita muutoksia sähkön tuotannossa ja käytössä, ja tarjota joustavaa sähkönsiirtoa.

Määritelmä (en) Although a standard definition does not exist, smart grid often refers to the modernization processes that the electricity power grid is experiencing with the widespread of information and communication technologies (ICTs).

Selite Sähköverkkojen uudistamisessa tullaan yhdistämään nykyistä yksisuuntaista tuotanto-siirto-välitys -mallia hajautetumpiin sähkölähteisiin ja kysyntäjoustoon. Tieto- ja viestintäteknologiaa tarvitaan monimutkaisemman verkon hallintaan. Älysähköverkko voi esimerkiksi ohjata paikallisia sähkönpientuottajia yhdistämään niiden tuottama sähkö virtuaalivoimalassa.

Selite (en) The modernization of electricity grids is expected to combine the traditional one-way generation-transmission-distribution scheme together with more distributed sources of electricity and demand flexibility. This imposes management challenges that ICTs may help to deal with. For example, the concept of smart grids may incorporate the management of localized small-scale generation that are virtually aggregated by a virtual utility.
