Weather radar measures the strength of the electromagnetic signal reflecting back from the objects, e.g. cloud and rain drops. Furthermore, radar equipped with a Doppler feature can detect the movement of the same dropplets. Since the radar is measuring in one direction at the time, this movement can be detected only in direction of the measurement beam. Any movement perpendicular to the measurement beam cannot be detected.
