Mallin vaakatasoinen erotuskyky ilmaisee minkä kokoista ilmakehän ilmiötä pystyy esittämään. Mitä tiheämmässä hilapisteet ovat, sitä tarkempi on erotuskyky ja sitä pienemmän mittaluokan ilmakehän ilmiöitä mallilla voidaan kuvata. Vaakatasoinen erotuskyky on yhteydessä hilapisteiden kokoon, mutta ne eivät ole sama asia. Vaakasuuntainen erotuskyky on tyypillisesti 5-8 x hilapisteen koko. Jos siis esitetään esimerkiksi 20 km:n kokoinen ilmakehän ilmiö, mallin hilakoko pitää olla 2.5-4 km.

Horizontal resolution of the model explain the size of the atmospheric phenomena that the model is able represent. The more dense the grid points are, the finer the resolution of the model is and the smaller-scale atmospheric features it can represent. Horizontal resolution is connected with grid size, but they are not equivalent. Typically the horizontal resolution of the model is 5-8 * grid size. In other words, in order to represent atmospheric feature with size of 20km, the model need to have 2.5-4 km grid size.
