Communications network in which content is directly addressable and routable, and communicates with content names instead of IP addresses. A specific brand of information-centric networks.
The essence of content-centric network is accessing content by name. All content is identified, addressed and retrieved by name instead of physical locations. A client requests a content item by sending out an Interest packet into the network. The network nodes can potentially store the content to serve the future requests. Content-centric network shifts the current Internet paradigm from point-to-point communication to content-centric dissemination. Content-centric network aims at solving some problems in current Internet like network congestion, content delivery and security and etc. Content-centric network started as a project of the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), but it is becoming a general name for all networks built on the same principles.
