Määritelmä Rantaviivan molemminpuolinen, muutaman kilometrin leveä alue, jossa esiintyy paikallisia ilmavirtauksia, esimerkiksi meri- ja maatuulia.

Selite Matala valtameren osa, joka ulottuu maalta nousuvesirajasta vedenalaiseen mannerlaatan kielekkeen reunaan. Tällä alueella maan ja meren ekologiset järjestelmät ovat vuorovaikutuksessa. Uusiutuvan energian tuotannossa huomioidaan, että kesällä Itämeren alueen rannikkovyöhyke on tyypillisesti vähemmän pilvistä kuin sisämaa, ja siten suosiollisempaa aurinkoenergiatuotannolle.
