In Finland church halls began transitioning from flat board ceilings to brick vaults or curved board vaults beginning in the mid-15th century. This shift marked the evolution from Romanesque roof structures to Gothic roof structures, characterized by the absence of tie beams, thus allowing more space for the ceiling. Gothic roof structures feature robust rafter feet composed of the lower section of the rafter, ashlar post, and sole piece. The rafter foot rests on two wall plates, which are integrated into the church walls and connected through ties. To stabilize the structure, the roof trusses are reinforced with collar beams and scissor beams, and are further secured by longitudinal beams (anchor beams) and wind braces. The connections of these timber structures are commonly doweled simple lap joint.
