Integrated assessment models (IAMs) link components such as energy systems, land use, economics, and climate processes to explore how policies and societal choices influence future greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. By integrating data and methods from disciplines like economics, environmental science, and engineering, IAMs allow researchers and policymakers to assess trade-offs, co-benefits, and long-term impacts of climate strategies. These models are used to develop global scenarios, including the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways and Representative Concentration Pathways, and to inform reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. While IAMs simplify complex systems, they provide valuable insights into how different development paths and policy decisions could shape climate outcomes and support evidence-based decision-making at national and international levels.
