    Määritelmä (en) A stochastic or random process is a mathematical object usually defined as a collection of random variables.
    Selite (en) Stochastic models can be contrasted with deterministic models. A deterministic model is specified by a set of equations that describe exactly how the system will evolve over time. In a stochastic model, the evolution is at least partially random and if the process is run several times, it will not give identical results. Different runs of a stochastic process are often called realizations of the process. Stochastic process may be also related to positions and define specific fields, namely Point Process Theory and Stochastic Geometry. Due to the impossibility of determinism, stochastic models are often used to evaluate and predict outcomes in electricity systems.
