Määritelmä (en) An interconnected group of electric transmission lines and associated equipment for transferring electric energy in bulk between a point of supply and a point at which it is delivered to consumers or to another electrical system.

Selite Siirtoverkonhaltija tai siirtoverkko-operaattori vastaa sähkönsiirrosta kantaverkossa. Fingrid on Suomen ainoa siirtoverkonhaltija. Myös kantaverkon käytön suunnittelu, valvonta sekä verkon ylläpito ja kehittäminen ovat sen vastuulla. Lisäksi tehtävänä on osallistua eurooppalaisen yhteistyöjärjestö ENTSO-E:n toimintaan ja eurooppalaisten markkina- ja käyttökoodien laadintaan sekä verkkosuunnitteluun.

The transmission system is the part of the power grid responsible for transporting large quantities of energy for (usually) large distances, connecting the regions that produce energy to the regions that will consume it. The main differences between these and the distribution systems are that voltage levels (which are higher to reduce transmission losses), and the distances covered (transmission systems usually span over hundreds to thousands of kilometers).

Transmission system operator (TSO) is the entity responsible for the reliability of its “local” transmission system, and that operates or directs the operations of the transmission facilities. Fingrid is the sole TSO in Finland. It transmits the electricity, manages cross-border connections between Finland and Swden, Estonia, Russia and Norway, and ensures power system production and consumption balance in Finland.
